While I had to sneak away early to celebrate my anniversary with Shay (6 years and counting!), our amazing garden misfits turned what could have been just another Saturday into a proper garden party!<\/p>\n<p>The weather might have been playing that &#8220;is it spring yet?&#8221; game we all know too well in Michigan, but that didn&#8217;t slow anyone down. Most folks bundled up except Glen who, true to form, rocked shorts because apparently winter is just a state of mind for that guy! \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanseed.info\/eastpointe-community-garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/2025-04-27_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/urbanseed.info\/eastpointe-community-garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/2025-04-27_.jpg 530w, https:\/\/urbanseed.info\/eastpointe-community-garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/2025-04-27_-480x285.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 530px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Morning Kickoff<\/h2>\n<p>Bill and Jen arrived bright and early at 9:30 to find our contractor had already started stacking the cement blocks for our new mulch and compost holding bins. Talk about getting a head start!<\/p>\n<p>Our bestie Germaine stopped by with her gorgeous handmade bookmarks and offered to become our unofficial &#8220;library keeper&#8221; &#8211; the Book Nook just got an upgrade!<\/p>\n<h2>All Hands on Deck<\/h2>\n<p>The day turned into a whirlwind of activity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bill and Jen cleared weeds from 12 giving garden beds and direct-sowed peas and radishes<\/li>\n<li>The A-frame garden beds got some serious attention with screening added and construction completed<\/li>\n<li>Our shelter (which took a beating in last week&#8217;s windstorm) got a full repair job with our super-official shelter foreman Kat showing up to oversee the repairs<\/li>\n<li>Lisa and Glen broke down the old wood beds behind the second shed<\/li>\n<li>Our OG Steve stopped by and helped Glen with demo-ing the old berry beds<\/li>\n<li>Glen also cleaned up the new berry and asparagus beds (busy guy, shorts and all!)<\/li>\n<li>Jeff tested a new method for filling our water catch system<\/li>\n<li>Lisa cleaned around the fire pit and got a celebration fire going<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>New Faces, Instant Family<\/h2>\n<p>We welcomed two first-timers who jumped right in like they&#8217;d been with us forever! Darren, visiting from Colorado, rolled up his sleeves to help with the shelter repair. And Steve, our new compost enthusiast, literally grabbed a handful of our soil and got excited about how healthy it was. (We&#8217;ve all been there, Steve. Good soil is basically gardener gold!)<\/p>\n<p>Shay apparently made such a quick connection with Steve that everyone thought they were already friends. The rest of the cement blocks were delivered, and the garden is really coming together for spring.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to everyone who came out! Whether you were pulling weeds, fixing structures, or just bringing your awesome vibes like Coley always does, you&#8217;re what makes this community garden grow.<\/p>\n<p>Same time next Saturday? The soil is calling! No experience needed, just bring yourself and maybe a water bottle.
