There’s something downright magical about watching a dozen soaking wet gardeners standing in the rain with measuring tapes, isn’t there? That was us earlier today at our weekly garden party, and honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else!
The Great Garden Shuffle Begins!
Our little patch of urban paradise is getting some fancy upgrades soon – a brand spanking new parking lot AND two concrete holding bins for our compost and wood chips. Super exciting stuff for garden nerds like us! But before the construction crews roll in, we had some serious garden Tetris to play.
The U-Pick garden beds needed a new home, so we started scooting them south. It’s still in the same general area, but this shift means our compost bins can live happily in the northwest corner of the parking lot. Of course, one move leads to another (isn’t that always the way?), and our Watermelon Man garden suddenly found itself in the middle of our garden Tetris! No worries though – those plants are now settling into their new digs in the garden bed just south of there and over at the flagpole garden out front.
Mother Nature Decided to Join the Party
The weather played nice for most of the morning, but around 1:00, the skies opened up. Did we run for cover? Nope! We stood out there getting absolutely drenched while debating the perfect garden layout down to the inch. If you drove by and saw a bunch of soggy misfits waving measuring tapes in the rain and laughing, that was us living our best garden life!
We also started pulling up all the cinder block borders around the garden beds near the walls. We’re saving every last one so they don’t get damaged during the parking lot work. Waste not, want not – am I right?
New Faces, Same Dirt-Loving Hearts
The absolute highlight? FIVE brand new volunteers joined our garden party! One awesome human actually found us through Reddit and decided to stop by. How cool is that? The internet bringing people together to get dirty and grow food – what a time to be alive!
Bill and Jen couldn’t make it to the garden themselves, but they sent over progress pics of their panels for the new A-frame garden bed attachments. They’re coming along beautifully and we can’t wait to see them in action!
Superhero Status Confirmed
Let me tell you about Jeff, who casually pulled our entire mailbox/Little Library straight out of the ground! If you need someone to help you move furniture next weekend, Jeff’s your person. Apparently garden strength is a real thing, folks!
Growing More Than Just Food
Every year, our garden grows in more ways than one. Yes, we’re growing thousands of pounds of food for our community, but we’re also growing our tribe. Every new face, every shared laugh in the rain, every moment of figuring things out together – that’s the real harvest.
So next time you see our garden crew out there – rain or shine, measuring tapes in hand – come say hi! No experience needed, just bring your smile (and maybe a raincoat). We’ve got plants to grow and community to build, and there’s always room for one more in our garden family.
Want to join our next garden adventure? Drop us a message or swing by during our regular garden hours. The soil doesn’t judge, and neither do we!
