Hey garden friends!
Mother Nature tried to rain on our parade this weekend, but you know what they say – dedicated gardeners are waterproof! ☔ As soon as the clouds parted, our amazing volunteers sprang into action at the Eastpointe Community Garden. Nothing keeps this crew down!
Behind-the-Scenes Action
While some of us were dodging raindrops, Jeff stayed cozy at home working on beautiful new signs for the garden (can’t wait to show those off in a few weeks!). Meanwhile, yours truly (John) was busy behind the computer screen connecting our website to the Fediverse and setting up this very blog system. That’s right – we’re expanding our digital roots so you can find us regardless of which platform you prefer!
A-Frame Adventures
The real action was happening at the garden itself. Bill and Jen tackled our A-frame project, adding doors to one structure and starting work on another. A few volunteers popped by to move things around, resulting in what Jen described as “cleaning up a bit and making more of a mess.” Hey, sometimes things get messier before they get tidier – that’s just garden physics!
The Great Shed Saga
Speaking of physics… let’s talk about the shed! Lisa shared the epic tale of relocating it from the brick wall to the shed wall – a seemingly simple task that turned into quite the adventure. The old injection-molded plastic parts (which have weathered many Michigan seasons) decided to test Bill and Jen’s patience during reassembly.
At one point, according to Lisa, the shed “literally violated all laws of physics and fell apart crumbling into its constituent atoms!” Despite this cosmic rebellion, Bill and Jen remained surprisingly calm. Lisa and Lauren jumped in to help, with Lauren doing the heavy lifting while Lisa juggled multiple tasks. Teamwork makes the dream work, even when garden structures decide to challenge the fundamental laws of the universe!
New Green Additions
The most exciting news? Some generous volunteers dropped off two amazing native tree additions – a pawpaw seedling and an American hazelnut tree/shrub! Lisa was thrilled about these new garden residents, and we can’t wait to watch them grow.
For those not familiar with pawpaw trees, they produce the largest edible fruit native to North America (sometimes called the “Michigan banana”), while hazelnuts will eventually give us delicious nuts and provide wildlife habitat. Both are perfect additions to our community garden ecosystem!
Join Us Next Time!
We had three returning volunteers today, with more hands making lighter work (even when that work involves battling physics-defying sheds). Garden days are always more fun with friends, so why not join us for our next Saturday gathering? We welcome gardeners of all experience levels – the soil doesn’t judge, and neither do we!
Next Garden Party: Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM No registration needed – just show up ready to get a little dirty and have a lot of fun!
Until next time, keep growing!
