Someone call Commissioner Gordon because there was a CRIME happening at the Eastpointe Community Garden this Saturday… a crime of PASSION for gardening! The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and volunteers were practically bursting through our garden gates to kick off our spring season in style!
From Med Students to Mud Warriors
Who needs the Bat Signal when you’ve got Coral? This powerhouse medical student from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine rallied nearly a dozen of her fellow future doctors for their DO Day of Service. And let me tell you, these folks showed UP! They even beat some of our regular volunteers to the garden (I’m looking at you, Bill!) and dove right into the dirt like they were born with trowels in their hands.
When you’ve got future doctors getting their hands dirty alongside our regular garden misfits, you KNOW magic is happening. These MSU volunteers weren’t afraid of hard work, and we’re sending a massive THANK YOU their way for choosing our little patch of paradise for their day of service!
The “Did We REALLY Do All That?” List
Remember that garden to-do list that’s been growing as fast as the bindweed? DEMOLISHED! Our superhero squad:
- Reorganized the entire wood pile (goodbye, ground rot!)
- Transformed our front garden wall beds from winter chaos to spring-ready canvases
- Moved the garden blocks by the walls in preparation for the new parking lot
- Added fancy-pants wood trim to the rest of the rental beds
- Created trellises for our sponsor beds (climbers gonna climb!)
- Made the area behind the shed visible again (It’s where old tools go to die)
Projects Coming Together
Remember those greenhouse caps that Bill and Jen have been meticulously working on? They’re REALLY starting to come together now! The garden cap door attachments got finished up this weekend – another project checked off our ever-growing list. It’s amazing to see these long-term projects finally taking shape as we head into the growing season.
With each weekend workday, our garden infrastructure gets stronger and more efficient. These aren’t just building projects – they’re investments in our garden’s future harvests and the community’s enjoyment of this space for years to come.
Signs of Awesome Teamwork
The wayfinding sign project was seriously next-level teamwork in action! Jeff and I were the masterminds behind this operation – me bringing my layout and design expertise while Jeff worked his carpentry wizardry on those gorgeous wooden signs. The man is literally an artist with wood!
But here’s where it gets good: Lauren – absolute BADASS alert! – jumped right in without hesitation and showed everyone how it’s done. While some might have stepped back from the heavy digging, Lauren grabbed that post-hole digger and dug out one of the three post holes like it was nothing. No fanfare, no fuss – just pure garden warrior energy! She’s really been bringing it the last few weeks!
We had a perfect system going – Jeff working on the first sign while Zack, Lauren and crew tackled the second one. And then there was sign number three… sitting in about 6 inches of muddy garden water. Did that stop our team? Not. Even. Close. Zack waded right into that mini-swamp without a second thought, proving that neither mud nor water nor gloom of soggy socks would keep our “Native Garden” sign from its appointed spot!
Books & Bucks
Our Little Free Library got some serious TLC thanks to Justine, who swooped in specifically to restock the shelves with fresh reads. Next time you’re at the garden, grab a book and find a shady spot – it’s scientifically proven* that books read under garden trees taste better. (*Not actually science, but I’m sticking to the story anyway.)
And let’s not forget the amazing $50 donation from Jim, Lisa’s fellow Wobbly! Every dollar helps us grow more food, build more community, and create more magic in this little slice of green heaven. Because lets be real, community gardens that give away all of the produce they grow for free are not sustainable in a capitalistic world without the help from people like Jim.
The Party That Wouldn’t End
What was supposed to be our regular 10 AM to 2 PM garden hang turned into an EIGHT-AND-A-HALF HOUR extravaganza! Nobody wanted to leave! With music pumping, laughter flowing, and dirt flying, we stretched that garden party all the way to 6:30 PM.
As Kat perfectly put it: “Music, laughter and a lot of work got done.” When the vibes are this good, who wants to go home?
Join Our Soil-Loving Shenanigans!
Got dirt? Want some? We gather EVERY Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, and you’re invited! No experience? No problem! No gardening skills? Who cares! No idea what a trowel is? I’ll show you! (Pretty sure it’s the pointy one.)
Whether you’re plant-obsessed or just like hanging out with cool people in the sunshine, our garden welcomes EVERYONE. Come for 20 minutes or stay all day – the choice is yours.
