Eastpointe Community Garden

We share the same mission as Urban Seed

Our mission is to promote community spirit, beautify our community, provide education about gardening, donate food to the community, and support the urban agriculture movement.

Urban Seed’s Flagship Garden: The Eastpointe Community Garden

Urban Seed’s flagship garden project, the Eastpointe Community Garden, is a flourishing hub of urban farming located at 16425 Nine Mile Road in Eastpointe, Michigan. It’s more than just a space for growing produce; it’s a vibrant community initiative promoting sustainable living, local produce, and community spirit. It features 26 generous ‘Giving Gardens’, which are maintained by dedicated volunteers. These gardens provide fresh produce to the local community through a free stand every Saturday during the growing season. Any remaining harvest or weekly produce is donated to local senior housing or food pantries.

The garden also includes seven accessible ‘U-Pick’ beds situated next to the parking lot. These beds are planted and maintained by out volunteers but anyone in the community is invited to harvest from them.  Additionally, there are five sponsored beds funded by local businesses. Volunteers take care of these beds, with all food harvested being donated back to the community.

This community garden also provides individuals with an opportunity to rent their own 4′ x 4′ x 19″ raised garden plots for $40.00, allowing them to cultivate their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Beyond providing fresh produce, the Eastpointe Community Garden is a haven of biodiversity, featuring a variety of pollinator, native, and wetland plants. It also offers places to sit, relax, and even a little library near the U-Pick beds.

The garden regularly hosts and participates in events and educational programs aimed at enhancing gardening skills, promoting environmental stewardship, and fostering community engagement.

To stay updated on Urban Seed’s initiatives, follow the Urban Seed – Eastpointe, MI Facebook page.

The Eastpointe Community Garden exemplifies the power of community collaboration in building a sustainable and healthy local food system.

Weekly garden party recap 🏳️‍🌈💚🏴‍☠️

What a day at the ECG! We had around a dozen amazing Love Life volunteers join us to weed the U-Pick Garden. Huge shoutout to all of you—your help is invaluable! Remember, no skills are needed, and we always welcome extra hands.

Our Giving Garden is absolutely thriving. The plants are so happy theyre getting top-heavy with veggies, so we tied them up. Today, we harvested an incredible 70 pounds of food for the community, including beans, cabbage, zucchini, beets, cherry tomatoes, greens, cucumbers, and probably more! Almost all of this was donated at our produce stand. Remember, we give away all our veggies every week (12-2 PM.)

Everyone worked really hard until around noon and then we took it easy with some new friends who came to hang out. We brainstormed ways to get more community initiatives going and even discussed starting new gardens in surrounding communities 👀

Special thanks to Davey who helped us trim one of the fence line trees—it was well overdue. Now, all our rental beds will get full sun. As he cut down the limbs, the rest of us broke them up and moved them into a large pile.

One of my favorite parts of the day was when a neighbor and his daughter stopped by. They enjoyed our space and even helped us catch cabbage moths with our new bug-catching nets. It was truly a community effort!

Join us next Saturday and be part of this amazing journey. https://UrbanSeed.info/
