You know what they say about the best-laid plans? Well, Mother Nature decided to throw us a curveball the day after July 4th – a scorching 95-degree heat wave that had most sensible folks camped out in front of their air conditioners. But not the Urban Seed crew: we’re not exactly what you’d call “sensible” when there’s garden work to be done!
Flying Solo (But Not for Long!)
I rolled up to the Eastpointe Community Garden right at 10 AM, fully expecting to be the only heat-crazy volunteer brave enough to show up. The parking lot was empty, the flags were down from our recent event, and honestly? For about five minutes, I wondered if I’d finally lost my marbles coming out in this furnace.
But then something beautiful happened – because it always does with this community.
Cola and Kat showed up not long after, followed by Caleb who immediately got to work on the garden beds by the parking lot. We’re getting ready for some big changes in that area, and Caleb spent his morning making sure we’re set up for a fresh start once the parking lot gets its makeover.
The Little Things That Make It All Work
Those behind-the-scenes moments that nobody really talks about but make everything possible? Yeah, we had plenty of those today. I got our volunteer sign-in board set up in a more visible space, moved the porta potty to more level ground (glamorous work, I know!), and put our flags back up since we’d taken them down for an event.
The wind was actually pretty perfect for some cool flag footage – sometimes you’ve got to find the silver lining in sweltering conditions!
We also managed to get one more bag of trash out to the curb. Big shout out to Nick for helping me clear out all the trash and compost earlier this week – though thanks to the holiday delay, our garbage is still sitting there like an unwelcome guest at the party 🥳
Garden Heroes in Action
Kat made sure everything got watered (because plants don’t take days off), while Cola helped with our harvest. Now, I’ll be honest – this wasn’t our biggest harvest to date. We’re in that weird transition period where we’re moving from spring crops to summer ones, but that’s just how gardening works. Kat’s fairy garden bed, though? That thing is absolutely crushing it!
And can we talk about Tomato Bill for a second? This guy has been coming to tend the U-Pick Garden for years. He used to just show up, do his thing, and disappear. But over the past couple years, he’s been hanging out more and more with everyone. I’m pretty sure we wore him down with our “charm”. We’ve unofficially started calling it “Tomato Bill’s U-Pick Garden” because that’s all he tends to.
The Ultimate Community Spirit
So here’s where the day went from “pretty good despite the heat” to “absolutely incredible.” Our new buddy William – who rented some beds this year and immediately passed the vibe check – reached out yesterday saying he wanted to bring hot dogs for everyone.
Now, get this: William makes the trek from Rochester every weekend. That’s not exactly a quick jaunt to Eastpointe on a normal day, but in 95-degree heat? The guy still showed up with bacon-wrapped hot dogs to grill for the whole crew. How do you not love a community that produces people like this?
The Afternoon Crew
Jeff showed up around noon after watering the South Warren Garden (because apparently we’re all heat-resistant superhumans), brought his pup Rory along, and helped me get the veggie stand set up. Then he helped William get the grill going while everyone else found some shade to recover from the morning’s work.
By the way, the South Warren Garden is looking really good too! It’s amazing to see the community fully embracing it.
Nine Heat Warriors and Seven Families Fed
By the time we wrapped up, we had nine volunteers who braved the furnace – nine people who decided that 95 degrees was just another Saturday at the garden! But here’s the really cool part: our free produce stand helped seven families take home fresh vegetables. Even in this weird transition week between spring and summer crops, we’re still making sure our neighbors have access to good food.
Sweet Corn Surprise!
Oh, and get this – Nick came through with an absolute game-changer! He brought us 20 pounds of fresh corn. Apparently one of his friends found it on sale at the grocery store, bought way more than they should have, and Nick knew exactly where the extras should go. Twenty pounds of sweet corn on the hottest day of the year? That’s what I call perfect timing!
What Heat Wave?
The thing that struck me most about today wasn’t just that people showed up despite the brutal temperature – it’s that people showed up with bacon-wrapped hot dogs and stayed to chat and hang out. Jeff mentioned in our group chat that everyone was “roasting,” but instead of calling it quits, folks helped each other pack up and even made sure William got where he needed to go for coffee afterward.
That’s the kind of community spirit that makes Urban Seed special. We don’t just grow vegetables together – we grow relationships, we look out for each other, and we find ways to make even the most sweltering days into something worth remembering.
The Bigger Picture
We’re growing food and supporting our community with fresh produce (our harvest numbers keep climbing every year!). But we’re also growing something harder to measure – connections, resilience, and the kind of neighborhood spirit that makes people trek from Rochester with hot dogs just because they want to take care of their garden family.
The garden is looking amazing right now, by the way. Everything’s thriving, our infrastructure keeps improving, and we’ve got that 25-year lease giving us the stability to dream big. Not bad for a group of misfits who apparently don’t know enough to come in from the heat!
Join the Heat-Resistant Fun
Think you’ve got what it takes to join our crew of slightly irrational garden enthusiasts? We meet every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Eastpointe Community Garden. No experience needed. Plus, you never know when someone might show up with bacon-wrapped hot dogs!
Next Saturday: We’ll be back at it, hopefully with slightly more reasonable temperatures. Come join us for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw our way!
