The Big News
The SWCG has secured a lease with the city of Warren! WOO!
So what comes next is where we will need your help. Yes, if you’re reading this we need your help! The initial costs (plants, construction, tools, water bills, etc.) are going to be a big lift, even with the help Urban Seed and Eastpointe Community Garden are providing.
If you feel like you’re in a place to help, then we would be truly grateful if you’d consider helping us with any of the following:
1. Monetary Donations
As problems that arise in the early garden will be ever changing, having the ability to purchase a solution makes things much easier. Each of the 4’x8′ beds we’re looking to construct will set us back around $170, and while we have been working tirelessly on grants, those will take time to come through (as almost all funding was dependent on having the signed lease).
Getting a few beds built and planted, as soon as possible, means getting fresh food into the community that much faster. Water bills can also stack up quickly in the heat of the summer, so getting us those funds to hold in reserve will help us keep those thirsty plants happy and producing.
Even $5 would be helpful and very much appreciated. If you can help more, then by all means do, but helping in any way you can already means a lot to us and the future of the project.
2. Plants
One of the biggest things we need are semi-mature vegetable seedlings or rooted cuttings that are ready to be planted. With the lease process taking months longer than expected, the vast majority of plants that had been meant for this garden have already been planted elsewhere.
We have a small reserve to get started but if anyone out there has extra plants that we can get in the ground this growing season then please reach out so we can discuss incorporating them into the garden plan.
3. Tools
When you’re starting from the very first step, you’re missing some of the crucial things that make a project possible. Spades, transfer shovels, wheelbarrows, a lawnmower (we have to cut the grass), mattocks, rain barrels, compost tumblers, etc.
One of the most difficult things about this garden is that we won’t be allowed a shed/storage on site. So everything not filled with water or dirt needs to come with us at the end of the day. If you have an old trailer that’s just taking up a space in your back yard, let us know! Finding a way to efficiently move these things around is going to be a huge obstacle in the path to making this project a success. But in the meantime we’ll keep doing our best with what we have, so send those tools our way!
4. You
Yes you! We need your help to make this place. Do you have a green thumb? Are you handy with a saw or impact driver? You like sipping a tea and riding on that tricked out deck mower of yours? Any and all are encouraged to come join us bring this place to life.
Drop us a line with your contact info and let us know when you’re typically available. We do big things on the weekends but will always also need friends to help water and check in on things during the weekdays as well.
The Bottom Line
We understand times are tough, so any help you can provide to us will not go wasted or unappreciated. This place is about bringing people together and doing something good for the community. If that’s something you want to be a part of then we say to you…
LET’S RIDE.
